What is a PFO?

The Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) otherwise commonly known as the “hole in the heart” is a tunnel connecting the two atria and is a natural consequence of foetal development. It typically closes soon after birth but fails to do so in about ¼ of the population (25-30% depending on decade of life).
